Labour Day Weekend

Well it's that time of year, fall is just around the corner and the kids are going back to school, some of Toronto's business will remain open for visitors and last minute back-to-school shoppers.

Here's a little list of what's open, and what's closed and just a few special events: If we've missed anythign just let us know!

Open Monday: Eaton Centre will run on holiday hours, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Some other shopping centres, including Square One, Vaughan Mills and Pacific Mall, will also remain open. Canada’s Wonderland, ROM, Casa Loma, Ontario Science Centre and Toronto Zoo are open.

Closed Monday: All Beer Stores and LCBO locations. Government offices and most banks. The Art Gallery of Ontario. All Toronto Public Library branches are closed Sunday and Monday.

Transit: TTC will operate on a holiday schedule Monday. GO trains will run on Sunday hours.

Weather: A warm and sunny long weekend is predicted, with temperatures peaking around 30C. A chance of thundershowers Monday. Off-peak hydro rates apply all weekend including Monday.

Canadian International Air Show

The 63rd annual Canadian International Air Show (CIAS) soars over Lake Ontario Labour Day weekend for another awe-inspiring show. The 2012 display will feature amazing feats of aerobatics and delight air show fans of all ages! Come join us at the CNE waterfront Labour Day weekend and experience this terrific fantasy of flight!

Toronto Blue Jays vs. Tampa Bay Rays

The Blue Jays square off against the Rays at Rogers Centre on Fri., Aug. 31, 2012 at 7 p.m., Sat., Sept. 1, 2012 at 1 p.m. and Sun., Sept. 2, 2012 at 1 p.m. On Labour Day Monday, Sept. 3 at 1 p.m., the Jays play the Baltimore Orioles at Rogers Centre. Tickets are $11.65, $14.25, $27.50, $45.10, $49.50, $66.25, $68.25, $81.25 and $216.25.

Rock ‘n’ Blues Fest

Johnny Winter, Rick Derringer, Edgar Winter and Kim Simmonds are part of the Rock ‘n’ Blues Fest happening on Sat., Sept. 1, 2012 at the Sound Academy, 11 Polson Street. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the show starts at 7 p.m. Tickets for Rock ‘n’ Blues Fest are $55 and can be purchased at Ticketmaster. The event is 19+.

Artisans at the Distillery

If you’re looking for a unique touch for your home, you may want to check out the Artisans at the Distillery handcrafted art sale at the Distillery District, which is taking place Fri., Aug. 31, Sat., Sept. 1, Sun., Sept. 2 and Mon., Sept. 3, 2012 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Approximately 65 local artists will be showcasing painting, jewellery, photography and sculpture for sale. Musicians performing at the art festival include Sean Conway, Lauren Best, Joshua Cockerill, Kristin Lindell, Paisley Jura and Jessica Stuart. Admission is free.


The Canadian National Exhibition celebrates its 134th year, running from Aug. 17, 2012 to Sept. 3, 2012. If you’re attending the CNE during the Labour Day weekend, you can catch the Air Show featuring the Snowbirds, which takes place Saturday, Sunday and Monday at 1 p.m. by the waterfront. You can also enjoy the Paul James Band at the CNE Casino Patio on Sat., Sept. 1 and Sun., Sept. 2 from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. Highlights at the CNE in 2012 include performances by Elvis Stojko and Scott Moir and Tessa Virtue. Other activities include the Midway, CNE Casino, concerts at the Bandshell, the President’s Choice SuperDogs Show, the Garden Show, the International and Home pavilions and the Food Building.

Labour Day Parade

Labour Day Parade begins at Queen St. and University Ave. at 9:30 a.m. and proceeds along Queen to Dufferin St., then south to the Dufferin Gate at the CNE about an hour and a half later.
